How To Get Raccoons Out Of Your Ceiling Or Walls
Finding raccoons in a domestic property can be a big problem, as they can cause a lot of damage as well as being likely to contaminate the area they are occupying within the property. Some of the most common areas of the home for these animals to nest is within ceiling or wall cavities because raccoons are naturally drawn to warm and dark areas where they will feel safe and secure. Finding these creatures nesting in the home can pose a lot of particularly difficult problems, and for many people it won't be possible for them to get the raccoons out without having to call a professional wildlife removal expert.
Finding The Raccoon's Nest
In many cases the raccoon will make a nest for itself in the period before giving birth, and many of those animals that are found within the ceiling and walls of a property will actually be nursing their young. One of the most important things to look for when searching your property for a raccoon's nest is to listen to the sounds and what part of your home they are coming from. Although raccoons are most often to be heard moving and shuffling around near dusk, those who are nursing a litter of young raccoons will often be active during the day, and the cries and whines from the young will also be audible for those within the home.
It is wise for those who are going to try and find the nest themselves to take precautions before venturing into the roof cavity, because being in close proximity with these animals can be a health hazard. Wearing a breathing mask and thick clothes to protect against bites from protective female raccoons is also wise. Once you are in the attic or roof space, move slowly and steadily, so as not to startle any raccoons. They will usually be in the more confined areas between the floor of the roof space and the roof beams in the traditional sloping roof.

What To Do Once You've Located The Raccoons
The right thing to do once you have located the animal will depend on whether or not it is a solitary raccoon or a nesting mother with young babies. For those who find a solitary raccoon or adult raccoons only, then the best course of action is to trap them and to remove them from the property. Cage traps will often be the most popular, and can be placed in an area near the nest. These will often be baited with meat or marshmallows in order to get the quickest results. If you have a mother with baby raccoons in your attic then the first course of action will be to observe the animals until you can see that the mother has left the attic to forage for food. If a trap with a metal divider is used, then once the mother has been captured the divider can be taken out and the mother and babies can be removed together.
